ALAMANCE
Lois Aneskievich
MEBANE -- Lois Aneskievich, who cared for many Triangle-area residents through her work as a home-health nurse, died November 9, in her Mebane home, surrounded by family and friends, ending her brave battle with bladder cancer.
Known as "Miss Lois" to countless patients and their families who enjoyed her warm bedside manner and benefited from her sharp clinical assessment skills, she resided in Mebane for over two decades.
Born Lois Christman in Summit Hill, Pennsylvania in 1931, Lois was scholastic oratory champion of Carbon County, representing Summit Hill High School.
Upon graduation, she was awarded a merit scholarship to attend the School of Nursing at Methodist Hospital of Philadelphia, from which she was graduated in 1952, with honors. She rose to the position of Head Nurse of Obstetrics at Methodist Hospital within three years of graduating.
After a four-year long courtship, she married Trooper John T. Aneskievich of the Pennsylvania State Police in 1956. Lois continued to work in nursing while raising her children and pursuing her BSN degree at several Philadelphia-area colleges.
In the 1970's, Lois worked as a school nurse in the Norristown (PA) Area School District, and began her home-health career with the Visiting Nurse Association of Montgomery County, Pa.
Widowed in 1986, Lois moved to Mebane two years later, joining the nursing departments of Alamance Memorial Hospital and later, the University of North Carolina Hospital, before returning to the field of home-health nursing with Home Health of Chapel Hill.
In an era before GPS-guidance, Lois was the only health-care worker seen by many patients living in the most rural parts of Central North Carolina.
"Nursing isn't just a profession; it's a calling," Lois often remarked. "Some of my patients lived in places where the dirt roads were not even on a map. It allowed me to explore so much of the Triangle-area. It was the most rewarding experience I've had in nursing."
Admired for her gardening, Lois practically became a fixture in Brookhollow, where daily she could be seen tending her gardens, making her residence a showpiece of the neighborhood, with displays of colorful azaleas and dogwood trees she planted herself, by hand.
She is survived by children, Joseph Aneskievich, of Greenville, S.C., twins, Jerome Aneskievich and Jill Stanislaw, both of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer; and a sister, Eleanor. She is also survived by a brother, Luther, of Chapel Hill, Tenn.; a niece, Donna Nalesnik, of Nesquehoning, Pa.; and a granddaughter, Caroline Aneskievich.
